Gutter Guards: Pros and Cons

Written by Joey Haack | Mar 12, 2024 2:08:00 PM

As a homeowner in the Roaring Fork Valley area of Colorado, you likely deal with a fair amount of debris building up in your gutters. Unless your gutters are properly prepared, this can lead to clogged downspouts and damage from water backing up. One potential solution is to install gutter guards. These are mesh or solid covers that fit over your gutters to block leaves and other debris while still allowing water through.

But are gutter guards the right choice for your home? Here are some pros and cons to consider when deciding if gutter guards are a worthwhile investment.

Potential Benefits of Gutter Guards

Prevent clogs and overflows.

Gutter guards can significantly cut down on the amount of debris that enters your gutters in the first place by providing a protective barrier. This means less time cleaning them out and reduced risk of clogs forming that could cause water to overflow. With clear, unobstructed gutters, rainwater and snowmelt can flow smoothly away from your home’s foundation, protecting against moisture issues.

Reduce roof and siding damage.

With fewer opportunities for clogs and water overflow, you’ll have less chance of water backing up and causing extensive damage to key exterior elements, like fascia boards, soffits, exterior walls, and siding. The guards themselves also help protect the gutters from premature corrosion or rust due to trapped standing water.

Less risk of ice dams.

Ice dams are thick blocks of ice that form along the edge of your roof when melting snow can’t drain properly through clogged gutters. This trapped water can then refreeze and cause significant damage. Well-designed gutter guards can help prevent gutter freezing and ice dams by ensuring melted snow has a clear path to flow through the gutter system, even after heavy snow or rain.

Require less maintenance.

Most types of quality gutter guards do not require heavy maintenance or cleaning beyond an annual inspection. This can save homeowners significant time and money, as the guards reduce the frequency of intensive gutter cleanings. However, it is important to note that while gutter guards can be effective, they aren’t completely foolproof. Some minimal debris may still accumulate over time.

Potential Drawbacks of Gutter Guards

Guards can dent or sustain damage.

One potential downside of gutter guards is that they can become dented, bent, or otherwise damaged over time. Ladders placed against the guards during roof repairs, large hailstones, or falling tree limbs can compromise the integrity of the guards. This can lead to a higher risk of water damage due to clogged gutters.

Climate considerations.

In areas with heavy snowfall, certain types of closed-top gutter guards may be more prone to allowing snow to accumulate and freeze on top. This can stress the gutter system. Micro-mesh or perforated guards might be better suited for snowy climates.

Not 100% foolproof.

No gutter guard system blocks 100% of debris all of the time. Small particles like seeds, pine needles, and dust can still enter gutters with guards installed and accumulate there. For this reason, it is still generally recommended to have gutters and guards professionally cleaned and inspected a couple of times each year.

When deciding if gutter guards are worth the investment for your home, carefully consider things like your local climate, the amount of surrounding trees and foliage, the design and pitch of your roof, and your overall budget. Consult with qualified gutter professionals in the Roaring Fork Valley region to determine which type of guard may work best for your specific needs and unique home.
