Signs You Have a Plumbing Leak in Your Home

Leaks in your home can be difficult to detect because so many pipes are hidden from view under floors and inside ceilings and walls. By the time you notice you have a problem, some of the damage could be irreparable, which makes early detection crucial. Knowing what signs to look for can help you discover a leak early and limit the damage it causes.

1. Your water bills have risen.

One way to tell that you have a plumbing leak somewhere is if your water bills become abnormally high and you can’t explain why. Call a quality plumber to examine your plumbing system and determine whether and where you have a leak.

2. You have damp areas.

If you notice new water stains or damp areas on floors, ceilings, or walls, you likely have a hidden leak. Look around sinks, toilets, tubs, and showers, as well, for discoloration or wetness. Address the problem as soon as possible by calling a professional for help.

3. An area begins smelling musty.

If a room or area in your home has a musty smell, clean it thoroughly. If the smell still lingers, you may have a leak that’s hidden from view. Call a plumber right away, or mold could begin to grow and destroy materials in your home. The longer you wait, the more you will have to repair or replace.

4. Your water pressure is lower than it should be.

Low water pressure often means one of two things: you could have a leak, or there may be a blockage somewhere in your plumbing system preventing water from flowing normally. In either case, you should call a plumber to find the problem and fix it for you.

If your water pressure drops suddenly, you may have a more serious problem: a broken pipe. Consider this an emergency, and call your plumber immediately.

5. Your water meter runs continuously.

One of the most straightforward ways to discover a hidden leak is to watch your water meter. First, make sure no one is running water in your home. Next, find your water meter, which is probably located somewhere in your yard. Bring a screwdriver or pair of pliers with you so you can easily remove the lid to the meter box. Lift the lid, and then remove the meter cap. If the meter is running, it means water is flowing somewhere in your home, which is likely a leak.
