How Often Should I Have My Gutters Cleaned?

Climbing up on a ladder and getting your hands dirty by dipping them into cold, wet, muddy leaves and debris certainly isn’t fun, which is why many of us put it off or skip it altogether sometimes. Clogged gutters can cause all sorts of problems, however, sometimes resulting in thousands of dollars worth of damage. How can gutters cause so much harm? Read on to find out.

How frequently do I need to clean out my gutters?

Most experts recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year—once in the fall before things freeze and again in the spring after the snow and ice melts. If you have pine trees or overhanging branches in your yard, you may need to clean your gutters quarterly or more often.

The whole reason you have gutters on your home is to help facilitate the proper flow of water from your roof to the ground. Your gutters are meant to ensure that water doesn’t drip directly down the side of your home or pool near your home’s foundation. Water should flow into your gutters and downspouts and be safely directed away from your home to prevent water damage.

What happens if I don’t clean my gutters regularly?

If your gutters aren’t cleaned regularly, leaves, pine needles, twigs, and other debris will accumulate in them. Clogs can easily form, preventing water from flowing freely. When water gets trapped behind a blockage, it will spill over the sides and can sink into your roof, walls, and floors.

Clogged gutters can result in serious water damage. The water that spills over the sides can pool near your home’s foundation and leak into your basement.

It’s very important to have your gutters cleaned before winter. If they’re left clogged, ice dams can form when snow melts and refreezes. Trapped water and ice can potentially cause your gutters to break off of your roof.

Do I need to clean my gutters if they have gutter guards?

If you have gutter covers, cleaning your gutters semi-annually is still necessary. It will likely be easier and take less time however, depending on the type you install, so make sure you choose wisely! Do some research before deciding on a type of gutter guard system; some are much more effective than others. Take the installation price into consideration as well before you buy to make sure it’s worth the extra cost. It may be more cost effective to pay for professional gutter cleaning services twice a year.
