Climbing up on a ladder and getting your hands dirty in cold, muddy leaves and debris isn’t fun, which is why many of us put it or skip it altogether sometimes. Clogged gutters can cause all sorts of problems, sometimes resulting in thousands of dollars in damage. So, how often should you clean your gutters? Read on to find out.
What happens if I don’t clean my gutters regularly?
If your gutters aren’t cleaned regularly, leaves, pine needles, twigs, and other debris will accumulate in them. Clogs can easily form, preventing water from flowing freely. Clogged gutters can result in serious water damage. When water gets trapped behind a blockage, it will spill over the sides and can sink into your roof, walls, and foundation.
It’s especially important to have your gutters cleaned before winter. If they’re left clogged, ice dams can form when snow melts and refreezes. Trapped water and ice can potentially cause your gutters to break off of your roof.
How often do I need to clean my gutters?
Most experts recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year—once in the fall before things freeze and again in the spring after the snow and ice melts. If you have pine trees or overhanging branches in your yard, you may need to clean your gutters quarterly or more often.
The main purpose of having gutters on your home is to facilitate the proper flow of water from your roof to the ground. Your gutters are meant to ensure that water doesn’t drip directly down the side of your home or pool near your home’s foundation. Water should flow into your gutters and downspouts and be safely directed away from your home to prevent water damage.
Do I need to clean my gutters if they have gutter guards?
If you have gutter covers, cleaning your gutters semi-annually is still necessary. It will likely be easier and take less time, depending on the type you install, so make sure you choose wisely! Do some research before deciding on a type of gutter guard system as some are more effective than others. Take the installation price into consideration as well before you buy to make sure it’s worth the extra cost. It may be more cost effective to pay for professional gutter cleaning services twice a year.
If you live in the Aspen area, we recommend semi-annual cleaning. You want your gutters to perform at peak efficiency at all times and in all weather conditions to prevent water damage and destruction to your home. While conducting your semi-annual cleaning, check for rotting, sagging, or cracks as they are signs that your gutters need to be replaced.
