5 Frequently Asked Plumbing Questions

Written by Joey Haack | May 18, 2019 5:45:00 PM

Plumbing is part of your everyday life. Unfortunately, so are its defects. Don’t let common plumbing issues trip you up! Check out these five commonly asked plumbing questions—and their answers.

Why is my drain clogged?

Drains become clogged as a result of insoluble items collecting on the inside of drainage pipes. While the particles may seem small and insignificant, insoluble debris will build up on the inside of your pipes over time, eventually creating a clog. If at all possible, don't allow anything to pass through the drain other than water and soap. You can be a little more lax with the kitchen sink if you have a garbage disposal, but you should still be cognizant of what you're allowing into your pipes. If your drain is clogged, contact a local plumbing expert. They’ll be able to remove the blockage and return your drain to normal.

Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaners?

Chemical drain cleaners are an insufficient way to handle a clogged pipe. Not only are they not properly treating the problem, but they're also potentially harmful to you, your family, and your property. If you have a clogged pipe, don't try to get by with simply pouring harsh chemical cleaners down your drain. Call your local plumber to determine the root of the issue and remedy it without any harmful side effects.

What causes a faucet to leak?

The constant dripping can drive anyone crazy. Why is your faucet leaking, anyway? There are several common causes of a leaky faucet including worn out parts, corrosion, and mineral buildup. If you’ve addressed all of these issues, contact a local plumber. An expert technician can inspect your faucet and identify the cause of the leak. You’ll be glad you didn’t just let it go!

What are the differences between hard and soft water?

The difference between hard and soft water is the presence of dissolved minerals like lime, calcium, and magnesium. The minerals in hard water can cause a number of unwanted effects in your home like water stains, dingy clothes, and reduced appliance lifespan. Hard water can be treated, however, to eliminate these problems.

Why won’t my toilet stop running?

It’s not just a nuisance; it’s also driving up your water bill. Fortunately, a running toilet is a fairly simple problem to fix. Chances are, you’ll be able to remedy the issue yourself. Remove the cover of your toilet’s water tank. When you look inside, you’ll see a lever attached to the handle. At the end of the lever is a “flapper.” If this isn’t properly sealing when you flush, water will continue to pour out of your tank. You should be able to adjust the lever to allow the flap to completely close. If it happens in the future, you may even be able to wiggle the handle to coax the cover closed. If it is a persistent problem, you can call your local plumber to assess what is causing the issue.
